Countdown is on to welcome Dippy to the Ulster Museum
In 6 weeks the Ulster Museum will welcome the iconic 21 metre long dinosaur ‘Dippy’ and online booking is now open so you can be among the first to see him.
Visitors urged to book ahead to see the largest dinosaur skeleton cast to visit Ireland
Dippy the Diplodocus will take up residence in the Ulster Museum from 28 September until 6 January as part of a UK tour, which marks the first time he’s ventured out of London since 1905.
National Museums NI and the Natural History Museum, in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation, will bring the beloved dinosaur - which has 292 bones, is an impressive 21.3 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high – to Belfast where he’s expected to be a big hit with young and old visitors alike!
It will be free to visit the exhibition but those planning to visit are urged to book time slots in advance as large crowds are expect to flock to the Ulster Museum during Dippy’s stay.
Dippy is visiting eight UK venues as part of a year-long tour to spark the next generation of scientists and encourage families to explore nature on their doorstep.
The iconic cast will be coming to us fresh from Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery where currently 100,000 people have already visited him. Previous to this, he enjoyed a hugely popular visit to Dorset Country Museum. The venue's visitor numbers exceeded 150,000 people, surpassing their annual figures in under three months.
At the Ulster Museum, his third stop, he will sit within an exhibition which explores the uniqueness of the natural world and biodiversity in this part of the island of Ireland.
“We’re now on the countdown to Dippy’s arrival at the Ulster Museum and we know that our visitors are as excited about meeting him as we are!
(Kathryn Thomson, Chief Executive of National Museums NI)
“His visit is also a wonderful opportunity to uncover and connect to stories from our own extensive Natural Sciences collections and for everyone to find out more about the uniqueness of the natural world in this part of Ireland.
“We have created an exciting programme of events for Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure that will appeal to all ages and inspire our visitors to learn more about the fascinating world of biodiversity.
Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure is brought to you by the Natural History in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation, and supported by Dell EMC and Williams & Hill.
