ALTNAHINCH RESERVOIR

ALTNAHINCH RESERVOIR

IT’S ONE OF THOSE PLACES

…tucked away in a remote part of Northern Ireland - and without someone telling you about it - you’d never know it was there.

Big thanks to Stephen Reid for leading the way on this one.

WHERE IS ALTNAHINCH RESERVOIR?

First head in the direction of Ballymena/Ballymoney. Take the road that leads to Loughguile or Corkey. Once you’re in that area, you’ll spot the brown signs leading to the reservoir.

When you arrive, just park at the side of the road near the gate. There are no toilet facilities here, so come prepared!

THE WALK

Overall, this is a fairly short one - taking about 5-10 minutes from your car to the dam, then another 10-15 minutes heading up the steps and around the edge of the reservoir.

If you’re with little ones - or photographers / videographers - an hour overall should do it.

Despite the fairly short walk, you’ll still be rewarded with spectacular views (and sounds) of the towering dam, falling water and then panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

There’s also a boardwalk that little ones (and those that like to take a pic/video) will love.

And not long onto the boardwalk, we were treated to the first dusting of snow this winter.

Thankfully, Scout was quick to our rescue - providing us with a nice little hand-warmer to share…

But poop jokes aside, please do bring home your (and your doggo’s) ‘litter’!

The boardwalk comes to an end at the far side of the reservoir. You’ll need to just do a 180° and go back the way you came. We did spot a rough path that looked like it carried on over to the forest, but with the deep mud and minds already on our second destination, we opted for the u-turn instead.

Check out these drone shots from local photographer Connor McCullough:

ADVENTURE, PART 2…

Our visit to Altnahinch Reservoir was only a stop on the way to our main destination. Click on the image below - it gets a bit wilder from here…
