BLUEBELLS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

If there’s one thing that shouts “SPRING IS HERE!”, it’s the return of the bluebells.

And if you want to see them yourself, you’ll need to act fast!

BEST TIME TO SEE BLUEBELLS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Generally, bluebells flower from mid-April through to the end of May.

Regional factors may cause them to flower earlier or later - but essentially you’ve about six weeks to see them, from when the first signs of purple pop up.

So…go, go, go!

BLUEBELL FACTS

  1. Bluebells are protected. It’s actually against the law to intentionally pick, uproot or destroy bluebells

  2. Nearly half the world’s bluebells are from the UK. In the rest of the world they’re quite rare.

  3. It takes bluebell colonies around 5-7 years to grow from seed to flower.

  4. Bluebells can take years to recover after footfall damage. If a bluebell’s leaves are crushed, they die back from lack of food as the leaves cannot photosynthesise.

So needless to say, please do take care on your adventures.

Don’t just ‘leave no trace’ - if you spot a bit of litter, throw it in your bag :)
