CROM ESTATE
CROM ESTATE
ONE OF FERMANAGH’S MOST STUNNING LOCATIONS
It’s not our first time visiting Crom Estate and it definitely won’t be our last. Despite the high chance of rain forecast - including thunder and lightning - we were well overdue a Fermanagh road trip.
And on this occasion, there was something special planned…
SCOUT’S FIRST BIRTHDAY!
Yes, the white ball of fluff was celebrating her big one-two (months).
Fair enough, she probably would’ve been happy with a big one-two hours lying in bed to celebrate, but she hadn’t been to Fermanagh and Crom before. We had.
About an hour and a half from Belfast, Crom is perched right on the edge of Upper Lough Erne (anyone else still have to think twice which one is Upper and which is Lower?).
While Crom Castle is a private venue itself, the National Trust look after the beautiful and vast estate grounds around it.
YEW TREES AT CROM ESTATE
While the estate has so many highlights, this is probably our favourite. Two giant, sprawling trees meet to form a hidden world between them.
Up until this point, the rain - with only a little bit of thunder and lighting - had arrived as forecast.
Thankfully though, most of it was as were driving through Fermanagh and into the estate. Five minutes into the walk it was easing off and as we arrived at the trees for a bit of shelter, the sun came out.
Isn’t it ironic...
The arrival of the sun making it look like a summer’s day….had it not been for the hoods up, scarves and gloves.
Following the well-marked path along the edge of Lough Erne, we arrived at the Boat House for a look around…
…before heading off to the little yellow building on the far right here (zoom in).
THE SUMMERHOUSE
Big thanks to our friends at National Trust NI for arranging the perfect outdoors~indoors afternoon tea location, to celebrate the occasion!
Just out of shot here, Scout was chomping on some treats and a giant bone that was left for her. ‘Better than a birthday cake’ she said after.
We highly recommend The Kissin Crust who gifted a luxury food hamper filled with a range of savoury and sweet delights. They’re based in Lisnaskea, which you’ll pass through on the way to Crom, if heading from Belfast direction.
After an hour sitting, listening to the wind and another brief burst of rain outside, we made our way around the rest of the Estate trail.
….stumbling across these friendly miniature ponies near the old stables.
Tiny!
And hilarious to watch - you could clearly tell which ones were the messers, winding up the others with play bites, kicks and all-round loudness.
The nature walk continued for another 30 minutes or so, before passing round the front of the Castle, back up the long drive and round to the main car park and facilities where we started a few hours earlier.
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES…
We’ll put a link here for where we went next in County Fermanagh.
Another great estate, more beautiful walking trails….and dog-friendly accommodation.
